Destructive Earthquake Occurred in Central Chinese Taipei

A 6.1‐magnitude earthquake struck the grounds of townships across the island,
leaving one person dead and 19 injured. The epicenter was located 38.8 kilometers
east of Nantuo County in central‐island and at a depth of 20 kilometers. The tremor
could be felt at diverse extents‐ from magnitude of 3 to 6‐ in almost every part of the
island. Rescue teams of the airborne service corps were sent right after the
occurrence to help with emergency relief.
The last critical occurrences in that area were one of magnitude of 7.3 in 1999,
causing 2400 deaths; and another of 6.2 in 2009, causing one death.
