A 6.4‐magnitude temblor struck Pingtung County, south to the capital of Chinese
Taipei. The sensible earthquake at a depth of 20.4 kilometers hit one morning during
the national holiday towards the end of February.
The occurrence cast effects no more critical than detaining the railway systems.
However, officials and experts suggested raise of alert among residents in the region,
given the fact that the area stood brutal attack by Typhoon Morakot in 2009 and
became vulnerable in geological conditions. Aftershocks following the occurrence
were expected.
