A 7.4‐magnitude earthquake hit off the Pacific coast of Guatemala near its border
with Mexico, where the tremor could be felt. The epicenter was 15 miles off the
western town of Champerico and 26 miles in depth. The temblor, causing destructive
debris and breaking roads, left at least 48 people dead and over one hundred injured.
So far 29 people are reported missing, while hundreds went homeless. The tremor
was the strongest to hit Guatemala since the 70s, which was scaled at 7.5‐magnitude
and took 23,000 lives.
