Fatal Rainfall Batters Southern Japan

Torrential rains have struck the southern Japanese island of Kyushu over last week, triggering mudslides that cut off hundreds of residents, who are depending on the supply teams and relief items from the government. Inundation resulted from swelling rivers flooded houses and urged thousands to be evacuated. As of Monday the 16th, 28 people were reported dead, of which the majority falls in the prefecture of Kumamoto.

According to the Japan Meteorological Agency, such extreme weather event was unprecedented in the region: the equivalent of one month’s rain fell in the region in just eight hours. The agency warned of the risk of more floods and mudslides given that further heavy rainfall was expected.
