Flash floods hit Batu City in East Java Province, Indonesia

Disaster authorities in Indonesia said flash floods hit Batu City after heavy rain fell on the surrounding slopes of Mount Arjuno-Welirang, causing the Brantas River to break its banks on 04 November, 2021.

Fast flowing flood water, mud and debris wreaked havoc as it raced through the Bumiaji District of the city. As many as 15 people were initially reported missing after being swept away. The Regional Disaster Management Agency (BPBD) of Batu City deployed search and rescue (SAR) teams. Four people were later found safe but 11 remained missing. As of early 05 November, the bodies of 6 victims had been found and 3 people remained missing. SAR operations were continuing.

One house was completely destroyed and at least 17 others severely damaged. Motorbikes, cars and livestock were also swept away.

The overflowing Brantas river also caused flooding in parts of Klojen District in nearby Malang City. No casualties were reported however.

Rainfall figures from Indonesia’s meteorological agency BMKG show heavy rain in the area from 04 November. The city of Pasuruan, situated about 50 km (30 miles) north of Batu, recorded 99mm of rain in a 24 hour period to 05 November.
