Flooding in southern Thailand

Flooding in southern Thailand has affected over 100,000 people across 8 provinces since late November according to disaster management authorities.

The affected provinces include Phetchaburi, Prachuap Khiri Khan, Chumphon, Surat Thani, Nakhon Si Thammarat, Krabi, Phatthalung and Songkhla. Thailand’s Department of Disaster Prevention and Mitigation (DDPM) reports that a total of 21,109 households (an estimated 105,545 people) have been impacted. No fatalities have been reported.

Rain intensified in southern parts of the country from around 27 November. According to Thai Meteorological Department (TMD), in a 24 hour period to 28 November 2021, the city of Songkhla recorded 244.3 mm of rain and Nakhon Si Thammarat saw 178.2 mm. Sawi in the central part of Chumphon Province recorded 143.8 mm of rain in 24 hours to 30 November. The following day Nakhon Si Thammarat saw further heavy rain, recording 274.4 mm in 24 hours to 01 December.

As of 01 December, DDPM said the worst of the flooding persisted in Chumphon, with 1,900 households affected; Surat Thani Province with 9,002 households were affected; Nakhon Si Thammarat Province with 3,241 households affected; and Songkhla with 118 households affected.
