A heavy snowfall began on December 5, 2014, from northern to western Japan, causing widespread damage in the nation. Since 5th, the snow had been accumulated almost a meter in the villages of Okura in the north and Shirakawa in the southwest. According to the Japan Meteorological Agency, the northern city of Sukayu registered a snowfall of 116cm.

The roads were blocked by fallen trees and snow after heavy weekend snow. According to the Tokushima prefectural government, there were 337 households isolated on 8th, without their transportation and communication networks. Japanese army troops in the mountainous region helped the inhabitants and unblocked access to the area where snow and wind had blocked the roads and cut the electricity supply. About 60 domestic flights were cancelled. Up to now, 8 people were dead.
