Once-In-A-Century Storm Caused Serious Flood in Christchurch
Once-in-a-century storm that forced the evacuation of homes, caused slips and cut power to thousands ofpeople across Canterbury, Christchurch. The fire agencyreceived 187 flooding-relatedcalls during the day. Over 160mm of rain had fallen on Lyttelton in the one day. The evacuations were precautionary and in response to the possibility of further slipsin the area.About3500Orion customers remained without power after the storm, with the majority expected to stay disconnected overnight. The wind gusts in exposed Wellinton areas reached 119km/h.
