Severe flooding began to affect parts of Thailand around the end of July, the Monsoon season of 2011. Triggered by the landfall of Tropical Storm Nock‐ten,floodwater soon spread through northeastern and central Thailand. Until October, parts of the capital city of Bangkok were inundated. The flooding continued until mid‐June 2012, leaving 815 people dead and another 13.6 million affected.

Furthermore, the catastrophe put 65 of the country’s 77 provinces on the list of disaster zones and damaged at least 20,000 square kilometers of farmlands.World Bank estimated the economic loss caused by the flooding at around 45.7 billion USD, mostly to the country’s manufacturing industry. The country’s authority has been working on disaster mitigation since the end of 2011.
