Typhoon Rammasun killed at least 30 people, with others missing, and destroyed tens of thousands of homes. This is the biggest typhoon to hit southern China in 40 years, after wreaking death and destruction on the Philippines. Worst hit was the island province of Hainan, where the storm made its first landfall on July 18. By July 21, 51,000 houses and 40,600ha(100,300 acres) of crops had been destroyed. The typhoon caused US$1.7bn in damage on the island.
