Typhoon Vongfong, the most intense tropical cyclone in 2014, influenced the Philippines, Taiwan, Japan and South Korea. On October 3, Vongfong was upgraded to a tropical storm by the Japan Meteorological Agency(JMA) and the Joint Typhoon Warning Center(JTWC). On October 7, Vongfong was classified the sixth super typhoon of 2014.

Typhoon Vongfong enhanced the strong northeast surge in the Taiwan Strait. A research vessel of Taiwan, RV Ocean Researcher 5, sank off the coast of Penghu on October 10 at around 8 pm. 2 were dead, 24 were injured. In Japan, 3 people were dead because of huge wind. According to Japan Broadcasting Corporation, 96 people were injured.
