Storm
Typhoon Bolaven, with gusts reaching 259 kilometers per hour, crossed the Japanese
island of Okinawa on Sunday. The strongest storm in nearly half a century brought
downpour in the region, which was expected to top 500 mm in 24 hours. No critical
damage was reported due to the solid structure of buildings; private residences and
infrastructure in the storm‐weary region are made to bear the strikes of furious
weather events. While the worst moment for Okinawa had passed, the Korean
peninsula is to be watchful as Bolaven moves northwards.
When Typhoon Tembin made landfall at Chinese Taipei two days ago, Bolaven
detained its movement towards Hong Kong and induced the “Fujiwhara Effect.” As
Bolaven moved up towards Okinawa, Tembin was predicted to make second landfall
in southern Chinese Taipei on Tuesday morning.
