Torrential rains associated with former Tropical Storm Etau shifted north after dumping unprecedented rainfall on parts of eastern Japan Wednesday and Thursday on September 9 and 10. Seven people are dead, 25 remain missing and 27 injured.
The storm has flooded thousands of buildings, caused at least 60 landslides. More than 100,000 people ordered to leave homes as torrential rains cause widespread disruption. The city of Joso, north of the capital, Tokyo, was hit by floods after the Kinugawa River burst its banks. Helicopter rescue teams have been plucking people from rooftops. Some areas have had power cuts and transport was disrupted, with many air and train services cancelled or delayed. Some roads were also closed.
The chief forecaster at the Japan Meteorological Agency (JMA), Takuya Deshimaru, said that the rainfall was "unprecedented" for that part of Japan. We can say this is an abnormal situation and there is imminent serious danger." Prime Minister Shinzo Abe said the authorities were doing their best. "The government will stand united and do its best to deal with the disaster... by putting its highest priority on people's lives," he told reporters.
